Lil’ Anna

Come all you joyful dancers
and listen to my song
there ain’t many answers
and it doesn’t last that long

Somewhere outside of Jacksonville
in the winter of eighty three
I met a girl named Anna Lil’
she came walking up to me
Said “what’s your pleasure boy,
do you wanna go
spend the summer in my pool
or watch the flowers grow

All you have to do is come up
my rooms on the second floor
Bring a drink, I’ll fill your cup
If you promise me ever more”
I said “I can’t I’ve got me a girl
waiting for me at home,
She means everything in the world
I couldn’t leave her alone”

“But she don’t drink moonshine
or smoke rope or dance”
“Yes but she’s helps me walk the line,
she gave me my best chance
Now I’m happy, a husband to a wife
so I can’t go with you
I just won’t fuck up my life
for the likes of you.”

So she turned to walk away
and glanced around the room
Waiting to see if I’d stay or run
as she hummed a soft tune,
something from so long ago
I’d heard in Birmingham,
something that went so slow
and was echoed by the band
